Karen earned her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from SUNY Buffalo, after which she worked as a manufacturing engineer for AMP, Inc. and then as a technical educator at Cognex Corporation and Fast Search and Transfer. In 2009, she earned her Ed.M. at Boston University in Education Policy, Planning, and Administration, specializing in Community Education. She completed her graduate field placement at The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship.

Karen is a current Council member of the Natick Early Childhood Network and has concentrated past volunteer efforts around voter rights education. She has been actively involved in several small musical groups in the area, primarily playing the clarinet. In addition, she has served as President, Scholarship Advisor, and House Corporation Treasurer with the Greater Boston Area Chi Omega Alumnae Association. But her primary outside interest these days is her family, including her young son, Ryan.
