Dearest Mandy,

This may come as a bit of a shock, but I’m writing to you from the future. No, this is not a joke or a trick and I can easily prove this to you. I know things about you that no one else does. I know you have been spending long hours at night after your parents have gone to bed working on perfecting your biology diagrams so that you get the 10/10 grade from Ms Fernandes, your class teacher.

“I know that you love to participate in many extra-curricular activities ranging from drama to public speaking to dance to sports like basketball and track and field, but always make sure that you never neglect your academics.”

I even know that when you sit at the dining table doing your homework and your parents sitting at the same table are watching tv, you never get distracted, hardly ever looking up. Right? There you go. Now you can safely believe who I am.

Let me start by telling you that you should be less anxious and enjoy your present moments. Your hard work and sincerity are definitely going to pay off. You will get into the best college in the country and you will go far. But there are other things in life that you need to always remember more than the lessons that you are taught at school–you are around people who love you a lot and you are special. Let no one convince you otherwise. Take the time to spend with friends.

Cherish the time you spend with Baba especially. Appreciate the amount he does for you. Memorize his laughter; savor his kindness, his strong support. His fatherly love will be a great fountain of warmth you’d always go back to when times become hard and worrisome. Remember it took me a long time to realize that he is the wind beneath my wings. He loves you and your sister more than anything else in the world and don’t ever forget that. Try to understand Ma a little more. With all of her idiosyncrasies, she actually still loves you.

You are going to travel to wonderful places…and go far. You are going to touch so many people’s lives … and inspire many. You are going to meet a simply amazing partner who just like your Dad will be your pillar of support. You are going to have two fantastic girls who will look up to you. Hey your life is going to be lovely… Did you every realize that?

Enjoy your present, welcome your doubts but don’t be afraid. Know that you have infinite possibilities; know you are smart and intelligent; that when you believe in yourself you infuse confidence in others too. Remember yesterday is the past, tomorrow is the future, but today is “present”, a gift. Make the most of it.

I hope you’ll hear me and realize I’m simply trying to help you enjoy your future even more than you already will.

Big hugs from your older self!

– Mandy
