Site Information
The site at Myrtle Baptist Church was founded by a group of dedicated women from the church in June 2004. The club meets on Saturday afternoons in October, November, February, and March. In addition, there are Leadership Forums, Winter Science Parties, and Museum Overnights. All girls grades K-7 are invited to join us. Girls in grades 7-8 and high school serve as Junior Mentors.
Myrtle was established October 1874 by freed men and sons of former slaves who settled in West Newton. The church, which evolved from within this community, became its first Black church, thus empowering the members to fulfill a desire to worship God in their own tradition. Today that tradition, over 130 years old, still lives on with members coming from within a 175-mile radius of the church.
