Doryen Bubeck

Doryen Bubeck was born in Albany, NY and was the oldest of five siblings. She has two brothers and two sisters. In grade school, her favorite subject in grade school was social studies, but when she got to college she became interested in science. While she was still in high school, at the age of 17, she wrote and published an article in Science magazine.

During her time in high school she took many Advanced Placement courses, which would later count for college credit. When she went to college, she received the Rensselaer Medal Scholarship, which was given to the top math and science students going to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her father helped her pay the rest of her tuition, but when he lost his job she decided to finish college early. She was able to do this because of all the AP courses she had taken in high school. During her time at RPI, she enjoyed studying social studies and organic chemistry, but did not like spelling and handwriting. After graduating college, she spent a summer working at a lab in Germany. She is very proud that she was able to get there and live there on her own. It gave her a great feeling of independence.

Doryen Bubeck is proud of all she has accomplished in her life. She says that the reason she has achieved so much in her life is because she never takes "no" for an answer. Currently she is working on her Ph.D. in Biophysics at Harvard University. She sees that there is a lack of females interested in the sciences, and wants to change that statistic. Her parents, both scientists inspired her as a young girl, and she hopes to be an inspiration herself to a new generation of young, female scientists. The message she would like to impart to young girls, whatever they want to do in life, is "Don't give up."

Where is she now?
