Murphy Spence (she/they)

Operations Manager

Murphy joined the SCFG team as the Operations Manager in 2025, having previously been a member of the ownership group at Porter Square Books. Aside from managing inventory and orders at the bookstore, their work history includes a wide range of roles and responsibilities, such as bookkeeping and analytics at an investment partnership. She originally trained in arts production management in Chicago, creating budgets, technical drawings, and leading construction for everything from theatrical productions to conventions. They are as handy with a drill as they are with a spreadsheet, and she spends her free time as a coordinator with Mutual Aid Medford and Somerville (MAMAS). They love reading and talking about cell biology and decolonization.

"I’m inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer, whose study of biology draws from both traditional ecological knowledge and Western scientific traditions. Her work serves as an incredible example of how centering TEK strengthens our efforts towards ecological restoration, when done in a way that respects and protects Indigenous knowledge."
